The Tory Oak received its name and notoriety when Col. Benjamin Cleveland, a renown Indian fighter, hanged several Tories from its limbs during the Revolutionary War. The old tree was destroyed by two storms, in June 1989 and 1992 and has been replaced by a similar black oak tree.
