To date, Old Wilkes has completed the following restoration projects:
County Courthouse Restoration
Our Current Project..... In April 2000 the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners gave Old Wilkes, Inc. a 99-year lease on the old county courthouse. Since that time many hours have been spent planning and conducting surveys for the restoration of the old building and the creation of a Wilkes County Heritage Museum.
In January of 2004, the trustees of Old Wilkes, Inc. signed their first contract, to supervise roofing renovations, to Vannoy Construction. By late summer, the project should be well on the way to becoming a reality. Different phases of restoration and the setting up of a museum, visitors center and gift shop will follow as funds become available. Knowing knowledge of the past will prepare us better for the future is a strong incentive for Old Wilkes, Inc. to fulfill itís dream; to establish the Wilkes County Heritage Museum.
The Old Jail, now a museum
The Robert Cleveland Log House was relocated and restored behind the Old Wilkes Jail.
The original Tory Oak tree, which was destroyed by two storms,
has been replaced and commemorated with a skirting of engraved bricks.
The old Finley Law Office was a gift from Bill and Carolyn Bare.
Watch for other projects to be announced soon....
